Forest Stewardship Council" title="

Claim is third-party verified and meets the most detailed and most rigorous standards

Description: Requires well-managed forestry practices, including the preservation of habitat and watersheds through less intensive harvesting, reduction of streamside erosion and avoidance of synthetic pesticides except where strictly monitored. Prohibits the use of genetically modified organisms and limits use of plantations. Allows restricted use of clear-cutting.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certified Fiber Sourcing" title="

Claim verified by third-party certifier

Description: Indicates that manufacturer meets a subset of SFI Standards that do not include the sustainable land-management objectives. Requires reforestation; protection of soil, air and water quality; and maintenance of biodiversity and habitats. Allows for restricted use of clear-cutting and herbicide use.

American Tree Farm System: Requires that forest owners commit to sustainable forestry practices; provide a forest management plan; protect or enhance soil, air and water quality; conserve biodiversity; and maintain special sites. Allows clear-cutting and herbicide use.

CSA Sustainable Forest Management: Requires conservation of biodiversity, protected areas, soil resources and water resources and the recognition of aboriginal and treaty rights. Product mark may be used for products that include a minimum of 70 percent wood from CSA-certified forests. Allows clear-cutting and herbicide use.
